autonomous community of Canary Islands
The Canary Islands is an archipelago that forms one of the Autonomous Communities of Spain. The islands are located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa, 100 km west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara.
The islands are: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Alegranza, La Graciosa and Montana Clara.
The most populated island is Tenerife (approximately one million inhabitants) and after it is the island of Gran Canaria.
The status of capital city is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - both are capitals respectively of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. The third largest city of the Canary Islands is Partido Judicial de La Laguna (known also as San Cristobal de La Laguna) on the island of Tenerife.
The climate is sub-tropical with longer hot days in summer and cool in winter.
