municipality of Barcelona

Barcelona is a seaport city and the capital of Catalonia autonomous region situated in northeastern Spain. The city is Spain's largest port and second largest city. Also it is the country's principal industrial and commercial centre, as well as a major cultural and educational centre.

It is said to have been founded in the 3rd century BC by the Carthaginians or the Phoenicians, and  later it was ruled by the Visigoths and Romans. It was captured by the Moors c. AD 715, but it was retaken by the Franks under Charlemagne in 801 and made the capital of the Spanish March (Catalonia). After Catalonia united with Aragon in 1137, Barcelona became a flourishing commercial centre and the rival of Italian ports.

In the 19th century it was a cauldron for radical social movements and Catalan separatism. It was the loyalist capital in 1937 – 39 during the Spanish Civil War when it was capture by Francisco Franco who brought the collapse of Catalan resistance and Catalonia's reintegration into Spain.

These days Barcelona is known for its handsome architecture - a handsome modern city, Barcelona has broad avenues, bustling traffic, and striking new buildings. The old city, with winding, narrow streets, where Roman walls are still visible, has many historic structures, including the imposing Cathedral of Santa Eulalia (13th–15th cent.) with its fine cloisters, the Church of Santa María del Mar, the city hall, and the Lonja or exchange. Also notable is the Church of the Sagrada Familia.

But when it comes to entertainment Barcelona has many places for live music and theatre which  including the world-renowned Gran Teatre del Liceu opera theatre, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the Teatre Lliure and the Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall. egun 1882), designed by Antonio Gaudí.

The holiday part of Barcelona is also something you don’t want to miss – the city has seven beaches, totaling 4, 5 km of coastline. Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta beaches, both 1100 m in length, are the largest, oldest and the most frequented beaches in Barcelona.

The Olympic port separates them from the other city beaches: Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Llevant. These beaches (ranging from 400 to 640 m) were opened as a result of the city restructuring to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, when a great number of industrial buildings were demolished. The 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures left the city a sandless bathing zone, a sort of sea pool.
