Spain is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula (map). It borders: - south and east to the Mediterranean Sea (except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar) - north to France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; - northwest and west to the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal.
Spain is the second largest country in Europe on the teritory. It includes also the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean (off the African coast), and two autonomous cities in North Africa - Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. The first-level of political divisions of Kingdom of Spain are the autonomous communities. Spain is divided to 17 autonomous communities. Each autonomous community consists of provinces and each province of municipalities (with towns and villages). The communities of Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Murcia and Navarre, having been granted autonomy as single-provinces for historical reasons The capital city is Madrid.
